Shortly after the move, her parents divorced and she changed her name to Joan Jett, because she thought it had more of a rock-star sound than her birth name (she has admitted in recent years that "Jett" was not actually her mother's maiden name, even though that is what she used to tell people). Her family then moved to West Covina, California, in Los Angeles County, providing Jett the opportunity to pursue her musical interests. She took some guitar lessons, but soon quit because the instructor kept trying to teach her folk songs. ![]() Jett got her first guitar at the age of 13. Jett lives in Long Beach, New York, and has been a New York resident since the late 1970s. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Jett's other notable songs include " Bad Reputation", " Light of Day", " I Hate Myself for Loving You" and her covers of " Crimson and Clover", " Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and " Dirty Deeds". With The Blackhearts, Jett is known for her rendition of the song " I Love Rock 'n Roll" which was number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Jett is best known for her work as the frontwoman of her band Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and for earlier founding and performing with the Runaways, which recorded and released the hit song " Cherry Bomb". It took me half a lifetime to work out that the Great Oz’s apologia pro vita sua fitted my father equally well-that he, too, was a good man but a very bad Wizard. And when the curtain fell away and his growing offspring discovered, like Dorothy, the truth about adult humbug, it was easy for me to think, as she did, that my Wizard must be a very bad man indeed. My father, Anis Ahmed Rushdie, was a magical parent of young children, but he was prone to explosions, thunderous rages, bolts of emotional lightning, puffs of dragon smoke, and other menaces of the type also practiced by Oz, the Great and Powerful, the first Wizard De-luxe. The Wizard, however, was right there in Bombay. It may be hard to believe, but England seemed as wonderful a prospect as Oz. More than that: I remember that when the possibility of my going to school in England was mentioned it felt as exciting as any voyage beyond the rainbow. I remember that “The Wizard of Oz”-the film, not the book, which I didn’t read as a child-was my very first literary influence. My bad memory-what my mother would call a “forgettery”-is probably just as well. I have forgotten almost everything about his adventures, except for an encounter with a talking pianola, whose personality is an improbable hybrid of Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, and the “playback singers” of Hindi movies, many of which made “The Wizard of Oz” look like kitchen-sink realism. The rainbow is broad, as wide as the sidewalk, and is constructed like a grand staircase. It was about a ten-year-old Bombay boy who one day happens upon a rainbow’s beginning, a place as elusive as any pot-of-gold end zone, and as rich in promises. Maybe he didn’t really find the story, in which case he had succumbed to the lure of fantasy, and this was the last of the many fairy tales he told me or else he did find it, and hugged it to himself as a talisman and a reminder of simpler times, thinking of it as his treasure, not mine-his pot of nostalgic parental gold. Shortly before my father’s death, in 1987, he claimed to have found a copy moldering in an old file, but, despite my pleadings, he never produced it, and nobody else ever laid eyes on the thing. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress.I wrote my first story in Bombay at the age of ten its title was “Over the Rainbow.” It amounted to a dozen or so pages, dutifully typed up by my father’s secretary on flimsy paper, and eventually it was lost somewhere on my family’s mazy journeyings between India, England, and Pakistan. ![]() ![]() Hamlin's "musical extravaganza," "The Wizard of Oz,"ġ903. These are not up to the quality of good optical finders, but a nice one beats the tunnel-vision finders used on compact cameras, at least. ![]() Probably that compromise means using an electronic viewfinder. The requirement for a large (presumably optical) viewfinder (described as being better than the X100's) but well under the cost of the Leica M9 means you're going to have to accept some compromise. (See dpreview's Christmas 2011 roundup of enthusiast compacts for a representative sample.) However, your requirements go beyond this. There's a recent spate of retro-designed compact, small-sensor cameras (without interchangeable lenses) which have "retro" styling and relatively high image quality and controls. You're not the only one who is interested in this type of camera. I intend to use it solely for street photography. So are there any other cameras out there that I should have considered but missed? (It still looks fun to use though just don't wanna plunk down that much money for it.) However, if anyone who's used a X100 can address my concerns for it or workarounds, I'm all ears. While the M9 is what I would want, it's just way out of my budget (which is just around $1500, note that this refers to my budget and not how much the M9 costs), and suppose that of most people, whereas the X100 misses on the manual focusing, large viewfinder, and interchangeable lens part. So far I've looked at the Leica M9 and Fujifilm Finepix X100. ease in manual focusing (ideally, something built for manual focusing)īasically, just a AE-1 with a digital sensor in place of film. Therefore I've been looking around for a digital equivalent that fulfills the following criteria: Also I do miss the convenience of digital. I do enjoy the film look (it's rather expensive in the long term though) but it's the way I use the camera that really appeals to me. With today's tech you can still get that retro look with filters and effects – without losing the hi-res original that you might prefer when this particular trend has run its course.I've recently started shooting with the Canon AE-1 Program and am loving it. ![]() And there are plenty of really great travel cameras that don't cost much but deliver really great results. The best phones today have cameras that stand-alone digital cameras couldn't even dream of, and even the cheapest budget phone is going to do a better job than a model from the turn of the Millennium. If you're going to be shooting anything you might want to look back on fondly, you'd be better off shooting on the very best camera you can get – and chances are, that camera is probably in your phone. A film camera effectively has near-infinite resolution, but an old digital camera is just rubbish. The reason we moved on from what are now considered retro cameras is because unlike vintage film cameras, the tech back then simply wasn't good enough. But if you're taking pics or video of anything you might want to look at in years to come, you might regret going retro. If you're just doing TikToks for fun then by all means load up on old kit and have a whale of a time. ![]() ![]() ![]() 60FPS is obviously perfect but it makes it impossible to devise the true potential of the GeForce GTX 650 on the lower resolutions.ĭropping down to Medium settings made the game thoroughly playable, regularly hitting the 60FPS cap. ![]() One thing to bear in mind is that there is a 60 FPS cap, suggesting enforced VSync which helps to stabilise the game somewhat.
